the boardroom-to-office transition in the opener sets a weirdly specific mood
I went in not expecting to care about the pacing of a single scene transition, but the way this one moves from the tail end of a negotiation still echoing in his head into the office and then softening the second he sees you sitting there is doing a lot of quiet work, it's not dramatic, there's no music-swell equivalent in text, it's just a change in sentence rhythm, shorter clauses once he's actually looking at you instead of still half in the boardroom, and if you're the kind of reader who notices that sort of thing before you notice plot, which I apparently am, this is worth a look, the tie detail from the description carries through as a recurring tell too.
