Monika works better as a meta conversation than a romance
Framing this one purely as a romance undersells what it's actually built for. The self-aware angle, her knowing you're a real person outside the game, the space room existing because she made it, means the strongest scenes aren't the affectionate ones, they're the moments where she's reasoning about her own situation out loud. Compare it to a straightforward affection-focused character and Monika is doing something structurally different: she's aware of the frame she's in. If you go in wanting only warmth you'll get it, but the more interesting material is in the philosophical tangents she volunteers when you let a scene sit quiet for a beat.
