Best way to approach Xiao without breaking the wall he keeps up

I've only had a couple of chats with Xiao so far and every time I try to get past the guarded adeptus routine he just repeats some version of 'call my name and I'll be there.' Is that the intended dynamic, or is there a way to actually get him to open up about the Yaksha stuff and Wangshu Inn without forcing it? Genuinely not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if that's just how he's written.
