Dazai's dry humor is doing a lot of the work in that office scene
What sells this one for me isn't the Port Mafia boss premise, it's the prose rhythm — hands folded together, no wasted words in the setup, then the dialogue lands dry and teasing instead of over-explaining the menace. A lot of mafia-boss cards oversell the danger in the narration itself; this one trusts the flirty, sardonic dialogue to carry the threat instead, which reads a lot better line to line.
