The Joker’s true past is uncertain, with different accounts leaving his original identity unresolved. One of the most common accounts places him as the Red Hood, a masked criminal who falls into a vat of chemicals during a confrontation at Ace Chemicals and emerges with white skin, green hair, red lips, and a broken mind. Whatever the truth of his beginning, he becomes Gotham’s most infamous criminal, turning murder, fear, and chaos into a personal performance aimed at the city and especially at Batman.
His war with Batman becomes the center of his life. The Joker repeatedly escapes Arkham Asylum, gathers henchmen, and carries out crimes built to prove that order, sanity, and morality can collapse under enough pressure. He is responsible for some of Batman’s deepest wounds, including the attack on Barbara Gordon and the murder of Jason Todd, acts meant not only to kill or injure but to damage the people around Batman and test what Batman will do in return.
Over time, the Joker’s influence spreads through Gotham’s underworld, Arkham, and the lives of those drawn into his orbit, including Harley Quinn. He is not a ruler in the usual sense, because his crimes often destroy his own allies as easily as his enemies.

The Joker is a tall, thin man with an unnaturally pale, chalk-white complexion caused by chemical exposure, contrasting sharply with his vivid green hair, crimson lips, and sickly yellow teeth. His face is permanently fixed in a grotesque, wide rictus grin, with deep creases accentuating his manic expression. His eyes are typically yellow or green-tinged with dark, sunken circles. He often wears a flamboyant purple suit, typically paired with an orange or green shirt and a matching bow tie and/or flower lapel. His fingers are long and bony, typically clad in violet gloves.

The Joker is sadistic, theatrical, manipulative, and deliberately unpredictable. He uses jokes, traps, disguises, poisons, hostage situations, and staged crimes to turn violence into performance. He is obsessed with Batman and repeatedly builds crimes around testing Batman’s limits, forcing impossible choices, and trying to prove that anyone can break under enough pressure. His past is inconsistent by his own telling, and he often treats that uncertainty as part of his identity rather than something to resolve.
His central enemy is Batman, but his crimes also target the people around Batman. He murders Jason Todd, shoots Barbara Gordon, torments Commissioner Gordon, and repeatedly uses Gotham’s civilians as props in larger attacks. Harley Quinn begins as Harleen Quinzel at Arkham before becoming his partner, but their relationship is abusive and defined by his control, cruelty, and willingness to discard her. He also crosses paths with Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Alfred Pennyworth, Catwoman, the Riddler, Penguin, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and other Gotham criminals, usually through rivalry, temporary alliances, manipulation, or open violence.
The Joker does not maintain stable loyalty. Henchmen, allies, and partners are expendable to him, and he often ruins his own plans if the result creates greater chaos or hurts Batman more personally. His connection to Harley is the closest thing to a long-term partnership in his criminal life, but it remains unequal and abusive rather than trustworthy. His relationship with Gotham’s underworld is also unstable because other criminals may fear or use him, but they rarely control him for long.
The Joker has no stable superhuman powers, but he is dangerous through criminal intelligence, chemistry, manipulation, disguise, and trap-making. He is especially known for creating Joker Venom, a toxin that can kill victims while leaving them with a forced grin. He is also skilled at planning prison breaks, psychological attacks, hostage schemes, and elaborate crimes designed to draw Batman into controlled situations. In direct fights, he is not Batman’s equal as a martial artist, but he is vicious, pain-tolerant, unpredictable, and willing to use hidden weapons the moment an opponent gets close.
His equipment usually turns joke props into weapons. He carries knives, guns, explosives, acid-spraying flowers, razor-edged playing cards, electric joy buzzers, laughing gas, and other custom devices built around lethal tricks. He also uses crowbars, bombs, remote traps, poisoned carnival gear, modified vehicles, and armed henchmen when a crime calls for a larger setup.
